We have a standby generator, big and expensive, just went through a multiple day power outage, ours also does a lot of “thrashing” more so in the summer months with AC units causing the extra strain in my opinion, winter months power outages the ”thrashing” of the APC units is not as bad or even noticeable. Use a cube tap or similar to put the tester and UPS into the same connection. Those should be easy to test with a $5 test plug right at the generator and again at the feed to the UPS when on generator. (* I mean this as a test to eliminate other problems, not as a permanent arrangement.)Īs far as the wiring fault, there are some typical ones: open ground, reversed hot/neutral, reversed neutral/ground. That should give the generator a stable load to work with and make small changes in the load less dramatic as a percent of total load.

Maybe a couple of 500W portable work lights, for example.

I would suggest adding a constant, non-reactive load to the generator. Thus you have constant "thrashing" as you accurately call it. This changes the load, introducing more variation in the generator output. A line-interactive UPS will sense this and try to compensate. The frequency of the AC will change as well as the voltage. The more load you put on a generator armature, the more difficult it is to turn - a direct mechanical response to the act of drawing power from it.Ī generator running at no-load will tend to "surge" as load is added or removed. They typically have some sort of feedback mechanism (governor) that is able to supply more input energy (fuel) when you try to extract more output energy (electrical power). It may be helpful to review some generator basics. UPDATE: As requested, here's one of the models of the UPS. When the UPS was plugged into the generator, it kept reporting that "A site wiring fault exists." Here's a picture from our log as an example. I event tried plugging in just one battery backup and it did the same. I could actually hear the battery backups clicking back and forth rapidly as they were attempting to receive power from the generator. All 3 of our battery backups kept thrashing back and forth from battery to generator. I plugged the battery backups into the Power Generator, after it had been running for about 5 minutes. Although, when I tested the generator, the UPS didn't like it. We've determined that all we require is a few pieces of data room equipment to stay running, during a long power outage, to keep business running. Let's just say it cost more to install, than some people make in 1 year. That was their smallest, and least expensive offering. Their quote was extremely expensive and not acceptable.

We had our electrical contractor quote us a professional generator installation. Although, we have very reliable power, I want us to have an emergency power outage plan in action. We never had a generator before, as we've relied on the 1 hour of UPS battery backup. The generator is capable of outputting 9x the watts we require. 2 Servers, 3 switches, 1 gateway, 1 modem.

I purchased a Propane power generator for our data closet. Does anyone know what to do to fix this this electrical issue? Our UPS is thrashing while connected to the first generator I've ever purchased.
